There are both advantages and disadvantages to employee training video for new hires. Known as the Picture Superiority Effect, after 3 days we tend to remember 10% of the information we’ve read in words, but 65% of the information we have seen in both picture and words. Researchers have also shown online learners to be more attentive to video than text. Now that video is so easily streamed online it offers the benefits of “any time, any location, any device†to learners. However, video can be expensive to produce and difficult to change as the company adapts into the future. Even though most smartphones offer quite powerful video cameras, companies are still a little uncomfortable using ‘amateur’ footage to teach their employees. They therefore spend thousands on polished, corporate videos which go out of date when an employee in the video leaves the company, or if policies or procedures change. Given the inconsistent quality and inefficiencies offered by the alternative – classroom style training – it’s surprising that companies are not taking advantage of the ‘tech in their pockets’.
